Ya’juj Ma’juj (Gog and Magog) – Who Are They? Where Are They? When Will They Come?

You’ve heard the names. Ya’juj and Ma’juj. Gog and Magog. Two mysterious nations mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. But who are they? Where are they? And why should you care?

Because they’re coming. And when they do, they’ll shake the entire world.

Who Are Ya’juj and Ma’juj?

The Quran mentions them twice—both times as nations of immense power and corruption:

[Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 94]
“They said: ‘O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are great corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you payment that you might make between us and them a barrier?'”

[Surah Al-Anbiya, Ayah 96-97]
“Until when [the dam of] Gog and Magog has been opened and they, from every elevation, descend. And [when] the true promise has approached; then suddenly the eyes of those who disbelieved will be staring [in horror, while they say], ‘O woe to us; we had been unmindful of this.'”

From these verses and authentic hadith, Islamic scholars conclude:

They are human beings – descendants of Prophet Nuh عليه السلام, specifically from his son Yafith (Japheth). Not demons. Not supernatural creatures. Humans.

They are enormous in number – The Prophet ﷺ said in Sahih al-Bukhari (3348) and Sahih Muslim (222):

“Allah ﷻ will say: ‘O Adam!’ He will reply, ‘I respond to Your call, with all good in Your Hand.’ Allah ﷻ will say: ‘Bring out the people of the Fire.’ He will say: ‘How many are the people of the Fire?’ Allah ﷻ will say: ‘Out of every thousand, take out nine hundred and ninety-nine.'”

The Prophet ﷺ then said: “For every one person from you (Muslims), there will be one thousand from Gog and Magog.”

For every ONE Muslim to ever exist from Adam عليه السلام until Judgment Day, there are ONE THOUSAND from Gog and Magog.

If 10 billion Muslims have existed throughout history, that means 10 TRILLION from Gog and Magog. That’s their population. Imprisoned. Behind a wall.

They are violent and corrupt – The Quran describes them as “great corrupters in the land.” When they’re released, they’ll cause unprecedented destruction.

The Wall of Dhul-Qarnayn

The story is found in Surah Al-Kahf (18:83-98):

Dhul-Qarnayn—a righteous king whom Allah ﷻ gave power and knowledge—traveled the earth. He went west to where the sun sets. He went east to where it rises. Then he went to a place between two mountains.

There, he found a people who complained about Ya’juj and Ma’juj raiding and pillaging them. They begged him: “Build us a barrier between us and them.”

Dhul-Qarn ayn agreed. He built a massive wall—not of stone, but of iron and copper:

[Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 96]
“Bring me sheets of iron – until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain cliffs, he said, ‘Blow [with bellows],’ until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, ‘Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper.'”

A barrier so strong that “they were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.” (18:97)

But then Allah ﷻ revealed its fate:

[Surah Al-Kahf, Ayah 98]
“This is a mercy from my Lord. But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and the promise of my Lord is ever true.”

The wall will break. It’s a matter of when, not if.

They’re Digging Right NOW

Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه reported in Sunan Ibn Majah (4080) and authenticated by scholars including Al-Albani: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Gog and Magog people dig every day until, when they can almost see the rays of the sun, the one who is in charge of them says: ‘Go back and you will finish it tomorrow,’ and when they come back to it, it is as hard as it was before.

[This will continue] until, when their time has come, and Allah ﷻ wishes to send them against the people, they will dig until they can almost see the rays of the sun, then the one who is in charge of them will say: ‘Go back, and you will finish it tomorrow, Insha Allah (if Allah wills).’

So they will say: ‘Insha Allah.’ Then they will come back to it and it will be as they left it, so they will dig their way out and emerge to the people.”

Read that carefully. They’re digging every single day. Right now. As you read this. Somewhere on Earth, behind that wall, billions of Ya’juj and Ma’juj are digging.

Every day they almost break through. Every day they’re told to return tomorrow. Every day they come back and find it restored by Allah’s power.

Until the day they say “Insha Allah.” That day—the day they remember Allah ﷻ even while doing evil—they’ll come back and find it unchanged. They’ll break through. And they’ll pour out into the world.

The Small Opening That Terrified the Prophet ﷺ

Zainab bint Jahsh رضي الله عنها reported in Sahih al-Bukhari (3346) and Sahih Muslim (2880):

The Prophet ﷺ woke up from sleep with a flushed red face and said: “La ilaha illallah! Woe to the Arabs from an evil that has approached! Today a hole has been made in the wall of Gog and Magog like this” – and he made a circle with his thumb and forefinger.

Zainab رضي الله عنها asked: “O Allah’s Messenger! Shall we be destroyed even though there are righteous people among us?”

He ﷺ replied: “Yes, if evil increases.”

A small hole. The size of a circle made by thumb and forefinger. And the Prophet ﷺ was terrified. He said “Woe to the Arabs!” Why? Because that small hole was the beginning. It meant their time was approaching.

That was 1400 years ago. How much bigger is that hole now?

When Will They Emerge?

The authentic hadith in Sahih Muslim (2937a) gives us the sequence:

1. The Dajjal (False Messiah) will appear and spread corruption for 40 days (1 day like a year, 1 day like a month, 1 day like a week, remaining days like normal days).

2. Prophet Isa ibn Maryam عليه السلام will descend in Damascus. He will kill the Dajjal at the gate of Ludd (near Jerusalem).

3. While Prophet Isa عليه السلام is still alive, Allah ﷻ will reveal to him: “Indeed, I have brought forth from My servants people against whom no one will be able to fight. So take My servants to Mount Tur (Sinai).”

4. Then Allah ﷻ will release Ya’juj and Ma’juj, and they will swarm down from every high place.

So their emergence happens AFTER the Dajjal is killed, DURING the time of Prophet Isa عليه السلام on Earth. They’re one of the last major signs before the Final Hour.

What Will They Do?

The hadith in Sahih Muslim (2937a) continues: The Prophet ﷺ said:

“The first group of them will pass by the Lake of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) and drink all of its water. Then when the last group passes by, they will say: ‘There was water here once.'”

Imagine that. The first wave drinks an entire SEA dry. The last wave finds it empty.

“They will shoot their arrows toward the sky, and the arrows will come back stained with blood. They will say: ‘We have defeated the people of earth and overcome the people of heaven.'”

They’ll be so arrogant, so powerful, that after conquering Earth, they’ll think they conquered heaven too.

Prophet Isa عليه السلام and the believers will be besieged on Mount Tur. No fighting them. No escaping them. Just waiting. While Ya’juj and Ma’juj rampage across the entire world.

How Will They Be Destroyed?

Not by weapons. Not by armies. By Allah’s mercy alone.

The hadith continues:

“Then Prophet Isa عليه السلام and his companions will supplicate to Allah ﷻ, and Allah ﷻ will send Naghaf (a type of worm/parasite) into their necks, and they will all die like a single soul dies.”

Billions of them. Killed simultaneously. By tiny worms Allah ﷻ sends into their necks. All dead in an instant.

The Prophet ﷺ said: “By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, the beasts of the earth will grow fat from their flesh.”

So many bodies that the animals of Earth will feast on them and grow fat.

Then Prophet Isa عليه السلام will make du’a, and Allah ﷻ will send birds to carry away their corpses and rain to wash away the filth they left.

Where Is the Wall Today?

The honest answer: We don’t know for certain.

Some say it’s in the Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas. Others suggest Central Asia near China. Some point to areas in modern-day Georgia, Azerbaijan, or even the Great Wall of China region.

Historical accounts mention a Caliph (Al-Wathiq) sending an expedition in the 9th century CE to find it. They reportedly found a massive iron wall in a remote mountainous region—but the exact location was lost to history.

What we know from hadith:

  • It’s between two mountains
  • It was made of iron and copper
  • It’s in a place distant from Arab lands (the Companion who saw it traveled far north)
  • Ya’juj and Ma’juj are behind it, currently unable to cross

The fact that we haven’t definitively located it doesn’t disprove it. The Earth has vast uninhabited, unexplored regions—especially in Central Asia and Siberia. A wall in an extremely remote mountainous area could easily remain undiscovered.

In Today’s Context

Some ask: “Could Ya’juj and Ma’juj be symbolic? Could they represent Western imperialism, communism, or modern nations?”

No. The Quran and authentic Sahih hadith describe them as:

  • Physical human beings in massive numbers
  • Currently alive behind a physical barrier
  • Digging daily trying to escape
  • Will emerge physically and be killed physically

The Prophet ﷺ didn’t speak in symbols about major signs. He described them literally.

Others ask: “With all our technology, how have we not found them?”

Consider:

  • The Earth is vast, with millions of square kilometers unexplored
  • If they’re in extreme mountain ranges or underground caverns in Siberia, Central Asia, or remote regions—satellite imagery might not reveal them
  • Allah ﷻ can conceal what He wills until the appointed time

What This Means for You

This is one of the major signs of the Hour. When Ya’juj and Ma’juj emerge, the Final Day is very close.

But they won’t emerge until:

  • The Mahdi appears
  • The Dajjal appears
  • Prophet Isa عليه السلام descends and kills Dajjal

So we’re not at their time yet. But we’re closer than ever before.

The Prophet ﷺ was terrified by a small hole 1400 years ago. What would he say today?

Your responsibility:

  • Believe in what Allah ﷻ revealed – Don’t dismiss Quranic accounts as myths
  • Prepare for the end times – Not by predicting dates, but by strengthening your faith
  • Increase your tawbah – The door is still open before the sun rises from the west
  • Seek refuge in Allah ﷻ from the Fitnah (trials) of the end times

The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say in every prayer: “O Allah ﷻ, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, from the punishment of Hell, from the trials of life and death, and from the trial of the False Messiah.”

Say it. Mean it. Because these aren’t fairy tales. They’re prophecies. And they’re coming true one by one.

Ya’juj and Ma’juj are real. They’re imprisoned. They’re digging. And one day soon, that wall will break.

Be ready.
